Justine Greening, Secretary of State for Transport, has today announced her decision to proceed with the plans to build a high speed rail line between London and the West Midlands and on to Manchester and Leeds. HS2 will improve capacity across the rail network, shorten journey times between Britain’s major population centres, boost the economy and create thousands of jobs.

Philip Hammond, the Transport Secretary, published yesterday the Government’s preferred line of route between London and the West Midlands for consultation. It included a number of detailed changes to mitigate some of the local impacts of the route as originally published in our report. It also included a direct link to the existing high speed line to the Channel Tunnel, HS1.

I am pleased to confirm that the High Speed Two Exceptional Hardship Scheme (EHS) started operation today, 20 August. The scheme is designed to provide assistance for those property owners who are most severely and immediately affected by the preferred route option – published in March this year - for a new high speed rail line between London and Birmingham and who need to sell their property.
