HS2 helping reduce overcrowding

By freeing up space on existing lines, for new local train services, passengers and freight, HS2 helps ease congestion and over-crowding. Travelling by train becomes a more convenient and enjoyable option for everybody, regardless of how far they’re going. Find out more about HS2 helping reduce overcrowding.

HS2 helping reduce carbon emissions

By freeing up capacity on our current railways, HS2 will help take hundreds of lorries off the roads every day as more freight can move to rail. This will improve air quality and help reduce carbon emissions. Learn more about HS2 and zero carbon Britain.

HS2 unlocks capacity for more trains across the North

HS2 will increase the airport’s importance as an international gateway and bring new jobs and businesses to the area.

HS2 will be integrated into existing rail networks as well as Northern Powerhouse Rail. Local Authorities are planning to improve local transport networks to take advantage of the extra capacity and connectivity HS2 will bring. The two new HS2 tracks to Manchester Airport and Manchester Piccadilly will create space for additional train paths on the corridors to Crewe and Stockport, providing options for more frequent local or regional services.

HS2 is integral to local plans to drive growth

It will help create jobs and secure investment years before it arrives. The Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) has the potential to double the economic output of Greater Manchester to £132bn by 2050, delivering 96,000 jobs and 16,800 homes. We’re working with Manchester City Council, Trafford Council, GMCA and regional stakeholders to ensure that the region achieves the full potential of HS2.

The GMCA redevelopment plans around the airport include creating a new diverse neighbourhood, with homes, offices and hotels creating the potential for 20,000 jobs over the next 10 years.

Manchester Airport Station

The HS2 station at Manchester Airport will improve the airport’s accessibility and capitalise on the investment programme at Terminal 2.

Manchester Airport is the UK’s principal international gateway outside of London, with over 70 airlines operating to over 200 destinations worldwide. By 2016, over 25m passenger journeys were made through the airport and this figure is set to increase. The airport is estimated to contribute over £950m to the economy each year, and helps directly sustain over 300 businesses and support 22,000 people who are employed directly on site. This is supported by the £1bn Transformation Programme currently being undertaken at the Airport.
