Littlewood Fencing – case study

Littlewood Fencing Ltd is an SME with their head office at Battle, East Sussex. They have been involved with HS2 since 2017 through three of HS2’s Tier 1 Joint Ventures (LMJV, Fusion and CSJV), providing high-security fencing, acoustic barriers, and vehicle safety barriers as well as the associated civil and ground works.

Littlewood Fencing have attended many of HS2’s supply chain engagement events including the HS2 Roadshow in 2016, HS2’s Meet the Contractor Events in 2017 and 2018 and HS2’s Safe at Heart Event in 2018.

Following the Meet the Contractor event in 2017, Littlewood Fencing updated their profile on CompeteFor and subsequently have tendered for and been awarded over £2 million worth of contracts in various areas along the line of route including in Birmingham to supply and install a wide range of fencing and gates.

The HS2 Meet the Contractor events were informative, useful and very well organised.

Graham Green, Divisional Director, Littlewood Fencing Ltd.

Littlewood Fencing continue to view HS2 as a big opportunity to grow and expand their business. The organisation currently has around 40 staff working on HS2 and so far they have employed 14 new staff and 3 new apprentices with more to come.

Given the broad geographical coverage of the contracts awarded, they have been able to establish local supply chains across different regions and open a new office in Birmingham.

Littlewood is very proud to be involved with HS2. We have been inspired by the initiatives and core values set out by HS2. Having already completed over £2 million of work under the project, HS2 has enabled us to bring new people into the industry and to set new standards which benefit the wider construction sector. We feel that HS2 is a huge opportunity for our company to thrive.

Jon Hobden, Managing Director, Littlewood Fencing Ltd

In addition, in order to deliver against HS2’s strategic goals and engage the local community, Littlewood Fencing have been spending time working with a local authority along the route to empty a building site for demolition. The items within the building have since been transferred to accommodation for the homeless.

Skills, Employment and Education

Littlewood Fencing has been able to deliver against HS2’s Skills, Employment and Education strategic goal through the up-skilling of existing staff in plant operation and installation.
