Information about HS2 Ltd during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

HS2 Ltd takes seriously its role of being a good neighbour every single day. The health, safety and wellbeing of the communities along the route of the new railway, and our staff, remains our top priority.

Construction sites and the supply chain

We are working closely with our supply chain to continually review the works on all our construction sites in line with the latest Government guidance on dealing with Covid-19. The Government’s current Covid-19 strategy makes clear that construction activity can continue as long as it complies with this guidance and those working in construction have been actively encouraged to go to work. Where we can operate within this guidance, we are continuing to deliver HS2 in line with the Government’s strategy to invest in the UK’s infrastructure,  where we are creating jobs and supporting the economy during this difficult time.

The guidance from the Government and Construction Leadership Council (CLC) requests our supply chain focus on eliminating risks associated with the pandemic. Where this is not possible the guidance requests that the supply chain reduces, isolates and controls any risks identified. Examples of advice for social distancing and travelling to your place of work are included in the guidance.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, our supply chain has stipulated to all staff and sub-contractors the requirement to comply with Government and industry guidelines regarding the fight against the COVID-19 virus. Every site has undergone a risk assessment, with the introduction of clear management plans and control measures prior to work commencing.

We work closely with our supply chain along the line of the new railway, with construction work at our sites constantly under review. Where works cannot be delivered in accordance with the PHE and CLC guidelines, sites have been temporarily closed to ensure the safety of our staff and the communities in which we are working, noting that some staff may be present to make the safety assessments and to ensure the sites remain safe and secure.

Where our supply chain is confident it can operate in line with PHE and CLC guidance, sites have continued to operate, and construction works are continuing to be undertaken. Every construction site across the line of route will remain under constant review, and at any time our supply chain are not able to follow PHE and CLC guidelines, we will take appropriate actions to ensure the safety of the workforce and communities in which we are working. This could include pausing works that cannot be delivered within the guidance.

Community engagement

During this period, we have taken the decision to postpone all public face-to-face engagement events and meetings. We have put in place alternative ways of communicating and engaging with communities over the coming weeks and months and the HS2 Helpdesk remains available all day, every day.
