What we are doing
Excavation of station box due to start in Autumn 2021
The reinforced concrete box will form the frame and base for the new state of the art HS2 station building and platforms, both surface and underground. To construct the station box, we will excavate down within the boundaries of the box to form the outline of the building’s base structure.
Work on excavating the new HS2 station box at Old Oak Common is scheduled to begin on 27 October 2021.
The station will be the largest constructed in the UK for over 100 years. The box will be 850m long, 50m wide and 16m deep. On completion the station will feature six subsurface platforms for HS2 trains, four Elizabeth line platforms and four platforms servicing existing services to the West and South West.
Before excavation begins, we will break down the existing diaphragm wall (D-wall). The D-wall is an underground concrete perimeter structure used to help retain the area for excavation to take place. We will also construct a concrete capping beam around the outline of the station box. This is placed on top of the D-Wall to stiffen the perimeter ahead of the excavation phase.
Once excavation starts, at the western end of the site, the excavated material will initially be removed by road, transported directly from the site by lorry to the Willesden European Terminal (WET) for onward dispersal. In Spring 2022 we expect to have installed a conveyor system to move excavated material across to the WET. This will considerably reduce the numbers of lorries entering and exiting the site on Old Common Lane.
During the initial phase of the excavation, extra traffic marshals will be in place to ensure that traffic on Old Oak Common Lane is managed as sensitively as possible.
