Viaducts and bridges

Crossing the landscape

We’re building viaducts and bridges along the route to carry Britain’s new high-speed railway safely and smoothly across the landscape.

These structures let the railway cross rivers, valleys, roads and existing rail lines. They keep communities connected and reduce disruption on the ground below.

Designed to fit their surroundings

We carefully design every viaduct and bridge to reflect its local environment. We work closely with architects, engineers, local authorities and communities to make sure each structure is proportionate, visually sensitive and right for its setting.

Where possible, we keep designs simple and elegant. We use natural materials and finishes that complement the surrounding landscape.

Built for the long term

We’re building our viaducts and bridges to last for generations. They meet strict safety standards and will withstand heavy use, extreme weather and the demands of a high-speed railway.

By using modern construction methods and durable materials, we’re reducing the need for future maintenance and minimising disruption over the railway’s lifetime.

Colne Valley viaduct

The Colne Valley viaduct is a gently curving structure to the northwest of London. At 2.1 miles (3.4km), it’s our longest viaduct.
