Calvert Infrastructure Maintenance Depot
What the depot does
Located between London and Birmingham, the Calvert Infrastructure Maintenance Depot is the main base for maintaining over 140 miles of high-speed network.
The depot will plan and manage all HS2 infrastructure maintenance, including:
- track maintenance
- overhead power systems
- tunnel maintenance
- vegetation management
- drainage and cable inspections
We’ll also use the depot to store and maintain on-track maintenance machines, train maintenance staff, and provide support when incidents happen on the main line.
Building the depot will create new public green spaces, footpaths and jobs for local people.
Building the depot
We’re working to reduce construction impact and meet our sustainability goals.
To minimise disruption for local people, we’ve built two bridges, one underpass and 3.4km of earthworks where HS2 crosses the East West Rail (EWR) route. Now we can focus on completing the Calvert cutting – a 2-mile stretch running north to south.
Before we build the depot, we’re creating a railhead on the site. This will let us move construction materials by train instead of by road, reducing lorry traffic. When we’ve finished using the railhead, we’ll transform the site into the permanent depot.
Designing the depot
We’ve designed the depot to fit with the local landscape and provide a good working environment for staff.
Our sustainable design reduces the industrial look by:
- breaking up the scale of buildings
- using green roofs
- choosing materials that blend in, like naturally ageing brick and timber
- using low-reflection metal finishes
- minimising glazed areas to reduce light at night
Inside, we’re creating healthy workspaces with plenty of natural light and air. Landscaping throughout the site helps us meet our sustainability goals.
The depot will achieve at least a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating through:
- net zero energy use
- local materials
- green infrastructure
- water harvesting technology
We’re creating biodiverse wetlands and ecological ponds north of the depot as part of our drainage system. You’ll be able to access these new green spaces via footpaths linking to the wider landscape.
