We’re building Curzon Street station in Birmingham city centre. This is where HS2 trains will arrive in Birmingham, connecting the city to the national high-speed network.
What we're building
Bromford tunnel
The Bromford tunnel is a 3.5-mile (5.6km) twin-bore tunnel just outside Birmingham.

Washwood Heath and NICC
The maintenance building will be the main hub for operations at the site. We’ll use it to maintain the HS2 train fleet and store materials and equipment.
The network integrated control centre (NICC) will oversee the whole HS2 network. It sits at the centre of the Washwood Heath depot site in a standalone building.

Aston Church Road overbridge
We’re building Aston Church Road overbridge to span the railway. It will connect Saltley, Washwood Heath and Nechells in Birmingham.

Saltley viaduct
The Saltley viaduct is 2 miles (3.2km) north-east of Birmingham city centre.

Curzon no. 2 viaduct
A 150-metre section of viaduct will form part of the approach to Curzon Street station in Birmingham.

The Curzon no. 3 viaduct and Lawley Middleway viaduct are part of the Curzon Street station approach area.

Curzon Street station
The new station is on the edge of Birmingham city centre. It will open with seven high-speed platforms.

HS2 north of Birmingham
In October 2025, we decided to pause further construction of HS2 north of Birmingham for four years. This means we can focus our efforts and resources on opening the first section of HS2 between Old Oak Common and Birmingham. It will bring the benefits of HS2 to passengers and businesses as quickly as possible, while making sure we use taxpayers’ money responsibly. We remain fully committed to completing the 18-mile stretch north of Birmingham.
Some construction in Staffordshire will continue. This includes essential utility works and work already under way that crosses major roads, motorways and the conventional rail network. We’re also completing the A5 overbridge and the A38 realignment.

Our CEO Mark Wild is resetting HS2’s cost and schedule. He successfully led Crossrail’s recovery in the wake of major challenges. This led to the successful opening of the Elizabeth line – now the busiest in the UK.
