The railway continues underground to Old Oak Common, where we’re building a major new station. It will connect with Elizabeth line and national rail services, making it easier for passengers to travel across the network.
What we're building
Euston tunnel
The Euston tunnel runs for 4.5 miles (7.2km) beneath central London, connecting Euston station to Old Oak Common station.
Atlas Road logistics tunnel
The 853m Atlas Road logistics tunnel will not carry HS2 trains. We’ll use it to bring in materials and remove excavated earth from the northern portal, where we’re boring the twin Euston tunnels.

Old Oak Common station
Old Oak Common station will connect HS2 with the Elizabeth line and Great Western Main Line services to Wales and the west of England.
Works on Old Oak Common Lane
We need to carry out several phases of work on Old Oak Common Lane throughout 2026 and beyond as we build the station. The works include:
- building new rail bridges and supports to bring Elizabeth line and Great Western Main Line (GWML) trains into the new station
- moving all utilities out of the existing road into mini-tunnels already built under the railway
- building new retaining walls
- lowering the road so double-decker buses can pass under the new rail bridges
- building a new retaining wall for the Hitachi North Pole Maintenance Depot, which serves Transport for London (TfL)
We’re working through the full plan for the utility works, lowering the road, building the new GWML bridge and keeping bus routes running. The road will need to close for an extended period. We’ll keep the local community updated as the programme develops.
We cannot give a firm timetable for the Old Oak Common Lane closure yet. We’re resetting the HS2 route-wide programme and that work will be complete in 2026. We’ll share updates as they become available.
New Network Rail bridges
We’re extending the existing Network Rail bridges to widen the GWML track as it approaches Old Oak Common station. This will reroute trains – including GWML, Heathrow Express and Elizabeth line services – into the eight new overground platforms.
The new bridges will span the TfL Central line and Old Oak Common Lane. The Old Oak Common Lane bridge will have a deck that is part concrete, part steel.
The underpass walls will extend about 100 metres and include Old Oak Common Lane, a pedestrian path and a dedicated cycle lane. We’ve designed the lighting to keep pedestrians, cyclists and drivers safe throughout the underpass. Pedestrian footpaths will sit above the carriageway, protected by secure barriers.

Old Oak Common Lane
Changes to Old Oak Common Lane
We need to carry out several activities on Old Oak Common Lane throughout 2026 and beyond as we continue building the station.
The works include:
- building new rail bridges and abutments to bring Elizabeth line and Great Western Main Line (GWMN) trains into the new station
- moving all utilities out of the existing road into mini-tunnels already constructed under the railway
- building new retaining walls
- lowering the road to allow double-decker buses to pass under the new rail bridges
- building a new retaining wall for the Hitachi North Pole Maintenance Depot which serves TfL
We’re working on the full plan to complete the utility diversions, lower Old Oak Common Lane, construct the new GWML bridge and accommodate bus routes. The road will need to be closed for an extended period and we will keep the local community updated on the programme for these works.
We can’t currently provide a programme for the closure of Old Oak Common Lane as we’re currently resetting the HS2 route-wide programme. This means we can’t give a certain schedule for the Old Oak Common Lane works yet. The reset work is being carried out in stages and will be completed in 2026. We’ll provide updates on the reset in the new year.
