Euston approaches revised works programme: Frequently asked questions
Are works in the Euston Approaches continuing?
Yes.
Whilst major excavations to construct the Euston Approaches tunnels and concrete box are being rescheduled, SCSJV continues with utility works and the extension of Granby Terrace and Hampstead Road bridges. Surveys, protective works to properties and noise insulation installations are also continuing.
The activities that will continue in the Euston Approaches include:
- Extension of Granby Terrace Bridge
- Extension of Hampstead Road bridge
- Works in the Euston Throat Retained Cut
- Utility diversion works in support of Hampstead Road Bridge and Granby Terrace Bridge
- Surveys and protective works required ahead of the tunnelling
- Use of the Regent’s Park Vehicle Holding Area and the existing lorry lay-by north of Park Village East
- Design work
As we are working next to the railway there will be times when we have to work at night when the tracks are not in use. We will always notify you in advance ahead of night-time works.
Activities being resequenced include:
- Works in the Euston Cavern and Euston Scissor Cut
- Cavern Shaft welfare and office building on Park Village East
- 24/7 tunnelling and major excavations
- Cavern shaft excavation and mechanical excavations of tunnels in Camden Cutting north
- Euston Scissor box south of Mornington Street Bridge
When will Mornington Street bridge open?
We reopened Mornington Street bridge to vehicles on 8 January 2024. We have put a 3-tonne weight limit in place which we are manging with width restriction barriers at both end of the bridge.
For safety reasons, Network Rail and SCS will continue to monitor the bridge whilst work continues beneath it.
Please note the bridge will be closed throughout the duration of tunnelling works and we will update you in advance. These are expected to take 5 years to complete.
When will Granby Terrace bridge open?
Work continues to extend Granby Terrace bridge. It will remain closed and only re-open once HS2 works in the Euston Approaches are finished. For safety, we cannot provide vehicle or pedestrian access while major construction works continue on and around the bridge.
What utility works are you doing on Hampstead Road?
We need to temporarily divert existing utilities on Hampstead Road before we extend Hampstead Road bridge. From April 2024 to August 2025, we will remove all the utilities from Hampstead Road and redirect them across Granby Terrace bridge and over the retaining wall within our worksite. After we extend Hampstead Road bridge, we will permanently reinstall the utilities on Hampstead Road.
Will you open the bus stop in front of Cartmel on Hampstead Road (Silverdale bus stop B)?
Silverdale bus stop B will remain closed as works on Hampstead Road continue.
Our site hoarding on Hampstead Road will remain in place because there is an operating worksite behind it. This means the western footpath and bus stop B will remain closed. We apologise for the disruption caused due to the closure of the bus stop.
Are you going ahead with the Cavern welfare building?
As works in the Euston Cavern are being rescheduled, the installation of the welfare building is on hold. We will update you when we know more. The existing site accommodation around Euston Approaches will remain operational.
Will you still need new lorry lay-bys on Park Village East?
As works in the Euston Scissor Cut are being rescheduled, the install of the new lorry lay-bys and tower cranes are on hold for now.
We will continue to use the lorry layby at the northern end of Park Village East to support works at track level.
Will the community be able to use any of the Euston Approaches worksite for other purposes while works are delayed?
Our worksite remains operational and is still in use. Unfortunately, there is no available space to safely accommodate public access.
