Design

Our design approach

The HS2 Design Vision establishes how design will make HS2 a catalyst for growth across Britain. We’re committed to delivering value for money through world-class design and construction, recognising that good design saves resources while poor design creates long-term costs.

Our infrastructure must look good, work well, and be easily maintained while meeting rigorous safety, sustainability, and resilience requirements. But we aim beyond good design to be an exemplar project that’s truly transformational.

We challenge every design team to meet fundamental design standards and then deliver the innovation and value every UK citizen deserves. From digital systems to urban infrastructure, we’re designing everything with purpose and care.

Three core design principles

People Design for everyone to benefit and enjoy Design for the needs of our diverse audiences Engage with communities over the life of the project Inspire excellence through creative talent

Place Design for a sense of place Design places and spaces that support quality of life Celebrate the local within a coherent national narrative Show commitment to the natural world

Time Design to stand the test of time Design to adapt for future generations Place a premium on the personal time of customers Make the most of the time to design

Design standards and oversight

An independent design panel helps make sure that HS2 delivers economic, social and environmental benefits for the whole country through great design.

‘D1’ Information Papers set out our design policy. They’re produced as part of the bill process.
