Early careers

Britain's new high-speed railway

We’re investing in the future by welcoming a new generation of apprentices and graduates to help shape this once-in-a-lifetime project.

Our programmes develop the skills needed to build the railway and create a pipeline of talent for major infrastructure projects now and in the future.

Apprenticeships open doors to careers

From engineering and design to business and digital, HS2 apprenticeships are helping people across the country take their first steps into exciting careers.

To date, 2,032 apprentices have joined the project, which surpassed the target of 2,000 apprenticeship starts, with two-thirds aged 16-24 and a third over 25.

Despite hitting the target, the HS2 project are still providing the opportunity to create pathways to skilled careers for those living close to the railway.

Looking for a career that makes a difference?

An HS2 apprenticeship gives you the chance to build skills, grow your future, and help deliver a project that will shape the nation.

Graduate programmes provide experience and opportunities

The programmes are designed to help graduates develop a broad understanding of major infrastructure project delivery. Graduates will complete six-month rotational placements aligned to their programme discipline, working in areas such as project management, engineering, environment and commercial.

125 graduates have already joined the project. We continue to invest in new graduates to help close the skills gap. These professionals will build major infrastructure projects for decades to come.

Be inspired - stories from those who work on HS2

Clara

Project Manager

HS2’s first apprentice

“I’m a completely different person to the one who started my apprenticeship. I’m more confident, more resilient and even more ambitious – one day I’d like to be CEO!”

Charlotte

Civil engineer

From T-Level student to apprentice of the year

“I originally found out about T-Levels from a student who came into my class at school and spoke about careers in construction. If that hadn’t happened, I never would have thought it was an option for me. Now, I attend early careers events with BBV to show other students what a career in construction could look like.”

Mohammed

Civil engineer

HS2’s 2,000th apprentice

“I used to look out of my bedroom window and see all the work taking place on HS2 – now I’m helping to build it. In the past, getting a job like this would mean travelling to London, but this project is opening up opportunities on the doorstep for young people like me in Birmingham.”

What can I expect?

You’ll gain skills that last beyond HS2 and are valued on infrastructure projects worldwide.
