The original design of HS2 in the Water Orton area, as proposed in the High Speed Rail Act 2017, was to have a shorter tunnel and carry the railway on a viaduct over the Park Hall Nature Reserve, River Tame and the local road network, and in a cutting at Water Orton.

Through design improvements made within the limits of the Act, we extended the Bromford Tunnel to 3.5-miles.

The extension of the Bromford tunnel from Birmingham into Warwickshire significantly reduced the overall impact of HS2 across the area.

Moving the tunnel portal to Water Orton has had major environmental benefits by removing 260,000 HGV movements over the course of construction which results in a saving of around 30,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.

It reduced potential impacts on the Park Hall Nature Reserve and the River Tame, and also resulted in a significant reduction in the number of properties impacted.

In addition, it reduced traffic impacts on local residents because the location provides better access to the motorway network, and overall it provides a more cost-effective method of construction for this part of the line by simplifying work within the area.
