Overview:

In this project students evaluate four possible routes for a new railway. With no perfect answer, they must weigh up pros and cons, balancing community, economic and environmental factors, and make a case for their choice. The project aims to develop students’ analytical, reasoning and communication skills, set in the context of a realistic business scenario.

Learning objectives:

Students will learn to:

  • Describe the STEM careers available in transport infrastructure.
  • Understand how engineering projects such as railways impact on communities, the economy and the environment.
  • Present a conclusion that can be defended with evidence.

Students will use the Essential Skills of speaking, listening, problem solving and teamwork.

Delivery notes:

This project will take about 10 hours to complete.

To extend the project students could use the Internet to carry out further research.
