We are seeking comments on design options for the Adelaide Road headhouse and ventilation shaft. The closing date for completing the online survey is Thursday 30 September 2021.

Our construction partner, Skanska Costain STRABAG Joint Venture (SCSJV) will be building the Euston Tunnel and other HS2 tunnels, ventilation shafts, headhouses and other structures in London, including the Adelaide Road headhouse in Camden.

The Adelaide Road headhouse is located between Chalk Farm Road and Primrose Hill Road on the Network Rail embankment area. The headhouse will be one of four structures that will be built to provide ventilation and emergency access to the high speed rail line for the 4.5mile long Euston Tunnels.

What is a ventilation shaft and headhouse?

The ventilation shaft and headhouse are key infrastructure elements to any railway tunnel. A ventilation (or vent) shaft, is the vertical opening that connects the tunnels to the surface and open air. It regulates air quality and temperature in the tunnel, provides access for emergency services, and allows smoke to be extracted in the event of a fire. The headhouse is the building on top of the ventilation shaft which contains fire control systems and the ventilation systems for the railway tunnels below.

Headhouse design

The revised design has been set further away from the road reducing industrial street frontage and has been adapted to a single storey on the side of Adelaide Road. The headhouse will be a double storey building from the railway side.

The materials proposed in our design for the Adelaide Road headhouse are timber, metal, concrete and brickwork. The finishes and materials will suit the local area.

We are planning to use similar materials at all headhouses between Euston and West Ruislip. The materials palette has been chosen according to the local environment, moving from brick through metal and towards wood as we move between rural and urban locations.


Our future landscape plan considers local ecology and the vegetation requirements for a site next to a live railway. Our landscape design includes block / slab paving and trees and scrub habitat planting. We’re also planning to install a green roof on the headhouse buildings. ​

Our key landscape drivers are: ​

  • to embed the building into the landscape ​
  • to provide visual screening and improve biodiversity of the site
  • to integrate the entrance by Adelaide Road with local context and heritage​

Boundary wall

We are planning to rebuild the wall along Adelaide Road. It is proposed to be red or grey brick with piers and railings. This would allow maximum greenery to show from the street. We would like your view on the colour of the wall.

Construction and traffic

Works are now ongoing at the Adelaide Road site to prepare for the future construction of the ventilation shaft and headhouse. You can view the latest updates about our ongoing works via the HS2 in your area map.

​We will continue to transport materials and equipment to the Adelaide Road site using agreed lorry routes. The number of vehicles travelling to and from the Adelaide Road site will vary during our construction programme. ​During periods of high activity on site, such as piling, excavation and construction of the shaft up to 30 to 40 vehicles will enter our site and up to 30 to 40 vehicles will exit our site.
