Dr Nelson Ogunshakin

Biography

Dr Nelson Ogunshakin OBE was appointed as the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) chief executive officer in July 2018 with overall responsibility for FIDIC’s global operations. He was appointed by London Mayor Sadiq Khan in 2016, and currently a board member of Transport for London, a £10.5bn annual turnover operator (TfL), is the Chair of its programmes and investment committee, member of the Remuneration Committee and previously served on its audit and assurance committee, and its customer service and operational performance panel. He was also a TfL nominee board member of Crossrail Limited (CRL) and chaired the Investment Committee on the £18.0bn new East-west rail development in London. He was appointed as Board member of the Connecting Places Catapult (CPC) in 2021 and currently serves as member of its remuneration committee.

Nelson was the immediate past president and CEO of the UK Association for Consultancy and Engineering for 14 years, during which time he was responsible for the transformation and repositioning of ACE, an association representing the interests of over 450 consultancy and engineering companies employing over 90,000 professionals, with annual turnover close to £9bn. He was appointed the Chief Secretary to Treasury; Sir Danny Alexander as co-chaired the UK National Infrastructure Plan Strategic Engagement Forum (NIPSEF) and was also appointed under London Mayor Boris Johnson, by the GLA as a member of the London Infrastructure Delivery Board. He chairs the Investment Committee of ARM-Harith Infrastructure Investment $250m Funds (PE) since 2015, and has over 35 years’ experience in planning, finance, procurement, delivery and management of major property and infrastructure investment projects.

He has provided strategic advice, business leadership, technical engineering solutions, commercial management, dispute resolution and financial advice to major investment bankers, Private Equity investors and Contractors on numerous multi-million-dollar build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT), PPP, PFI building and infrastructure capital projects in the UK, Europe, Africa, Middle East, Asia, China, Canada, Latin America, and USA. Over the years, he has earned the respects of major corporate executives, ruling Government executives at local, State / Regional and National/ Federation level, and international multi-lateral funding agencies.

Nelson has a BSc in Civil Engineering and Doctor of Science & Engineering from Aston University, MSc in Construction and Programme Management from Birmingham University, and an MBA in Strategic Management and Corporate Finance from Aston University, UK, where he is currently a Royal Academy of Engineering visiting professor on infrastructure investment. Nelson is a Chartered Engineer (CEng), Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE), Member of Chartered Institute of Directors(MIoD), a CEDR accredited mediator, member of Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (MCIArb) and Chartered Institute of Marketing (MCIM).

Nelson was awarded an “Officer of Order of British Empire (OBE) by HRM The Queen in her Birthday honours for his contributions to the UK Engineering and construction Industry in June 2010, voted one of the top 100 Black influential business leaders in the UK in 2017, 2018, and 2019. He was also admitted in to The Smeatonian Society as First-Class member in 2019 and elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng) in 2021 and Fellowship of Nigeria Academy of Engineering (FAEng) in 2023.
