A45 Coventry Road Overbridge

Work item: A45 phases of work

Work Item Summary

Estimated Start Date
08/05/2025
Estimated End Date
31/12/2028

What we are doing

The new high-speed railway will pass under the A45 Coventry Road as it approaches the new Interchange Station being built in Solihull. This section of the A45 Coventry Road is located near Bickenhill, between Stonebridge roundabout and M42 Junction 6.

The A45 overbridge and two slip road bridges (East Way and Service Road), located either side of the A45, will be constructed and opened to traffic before we can complete earthworks and construct the railway to pass under.

The East Way slip road bridge and road realignment was completed and opened in May 2025. The Service Road bridge is currently being constructed off-line and is due to be completed and open to traffic in early 2026.

We are now preparing for the construction of the A45 overbridge which will be built in two sections. The first section of bridge we will construct will be the eastbound and once complete we will commence construction of the westbound. Preparatory works to construct the eastbound section of the bridge began in Spring 2025 and construction will be completed in early 2027. This will be followed by the construction of the westbound section of the bridge from early 2027 until summer 2028.

Visualisation of the A45 realignment

To allow us to safely construct the A45 overbridge structure, we will move traffic across the carriageways and place a series of traffic management restrictions on the carriageways. This will include the installation of a contraflow traffic management system with narrow lanes, switching across carriageways, and lane closures to maintain two lanes of traffic flow. This is explained in the video below.

Programme update

We have installed narrow lanes on the A45 Coventry Road eastbound carriageways and have reduced the speed limits to ensure the area is a safe space for our workforce and road users.

Completion of the East Way slip road bridge, in May 2025, required the temporary closures of the A45 eastbound carriageway to carry out earthworks, road realignment and tie-in works. The new bridge and road realignment have been opened to traffic and will enable the construction of a contraflow system.

During the summer we will commence working in the central reservation as we construct the A45 contraflow system, widen the westbound carriageways and undertake sheet piling works. Once the contraflow system is complete we will switch traffic across from the eastbound carriageway and progress the construction of the eastbound section of the A45 overbridge.

Traffic management

To reduce the impact on the surrounding road network we work closely with National Highways to make sure the traffic management proposals have been designed and take into consideration any existing or planned traffic management in the area.

We are aware our works may impact road users travelling on the M42, Stonebridge Island roundabout or the A452 and we work hard to minimise any disruptions through our planning processes. In addition to this we have put in place a recovery system throughout our work area and installed a temporary new speed limit to be enforced by average speed cameras.
