What we are doing
The launching girder used to construct the Colne Valley viaduct has now reached the South Embankment site off Harvil Road in Hillingdon. The girder will install the final segments in early September, and it will then be dismantled.
Works to take the girder apart will take several weeks. In order to dismantle the girder safely at the South Embankment, works will take place 24/7 from Monday 16 September through to Friday 25 October 2024. Once the final concrete segment is in place at the southern end of the viaduct, the launching girder will be moved onto a platform. The removal of each section of the girder will be done using a large crane weighing 160 tonnes and each section will take some days to remove each time.
Each section will then be placed in a sea container before being removed from site.
There will be some noise associated with the work, such as the cutting of steel.
Removal from site will take place up until December 2024 once the girder is apart.
