Update: Stanhope Street utilities road closures – October to December 2025

What we are doing

We have been diverting utility services on and next to Hampstead Road, to clear our working area before we begin works to extend Hampstead Road bridge. We previously installed a new cable route from Lidlington Place to Varndell Street via Granby Terrace, to replace the existing route next to Hampstead Road.

Now that we have installed the ducting which will form the cable route, the next stage is to pull the cables through the pipes between underground cable joint bays located on the route. We completed some of these works earlier this year.

From 27 October to 11 February 2026, we will work Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, Saturdays from 8am to 5pm and Sundays from 10am to 5pm. To reduce impacts to residents, there will be no concrete breaking after 1pm on Saturdays and no noisy works on Sundays.

Update on changes in traffic management in the junction of Stanhope Street and Varndell Street. 

In addition to the current Stanhope Street closure north of the junction of Varndell Street, we will close the eastbound lane on Varndell Street, south of Stanhope Street from 20 November.

We have suspended parking bays on Varndell Street during these works. Traffic will be diverted via Mackworth Street, Harrington Street and Varndell Street. There will be temporary traffic lights installed at this junction.

We expect these works to be complete and road re-opened by 23 December.
