Lane closures on Hampstead Road and Stanhope Street – 5 January to 6 February 2026

What we are doing

We are continuing our programme of utility diversion works on Hampstead Road as well as our cable pulling works on Hampstead Road and Stanhope Street in preparation for the Hampstead Road bridge extension works.

We previously installed a new cable route from Lidlington Place to Varndell Street via Granby Terrace, to replace the existing route next to Hampstead Road. Now that we have installed the ducting which will form the cable route, we are currently pulling the cables through the pipes between underground cable joint bays located on the route. We completed some of these works earlier in 2025.

Lane closures on Hampstead Road – 5 January to 6 February 2026

From 5 January to 6 February 2026, there will be lane closures in the following locations:

• Middle two lanes near Granby Terrace bridge, and the footpath near Ampthill Estate.
• Southbound lane near Varndell Street including a full closure of Varndell Street. Vehicle access to Regent’s Park estate will be via Robert Street.
• The footpath on Hampstead Road near Cardington Street. Cardington Street will remain closed and pedestrians will be diverted through the carriageway and worksite.

We will maintain two way traffic on Hampstead Road using temporary traffic lights.

Please note that current works in southbound lane will require weekend works by Cartmel – 13, 14, 20 and 21 December 2025.

Lane closures on Stanhope Street – 19 to 30 January 2026

From 19 to 30 January 2026, at the junction of Stanhope Street and Varndell Street, we will close the eastbound lane on Varndell Street, south of Stanhope Street and the southbound lane on Stanhope Street north of Varndell Street.

There will be temporary traffic lights installed at this junction, and we will suspend parking bays on Varndell Street and Stanhope Street during these works.

We will continue to monitor the traffic management and reduce impacts where possible. We apologise for any inconvenience these works may cause.
