Update on utility works on Hampstead Road – Varndell Street to Lidlington Place

What we are doing

We are continuing our programme of utility diversion works on Hampstead Road as well as our cable pulling works on Hampstead Road and Stanhope Street in preparation for the Hampstead Road bridge extension works. These works being carried out by our construction partner SCSjv.

We previously installed a new cable route from Lidlington Place to Varndell Street via Granby Terrace, to replace the existing route next to Hampstead Road. Now that we have installed the ducting which will form the cable route, we are currently pulling the cables through the pipes between underground cable joint bays located on the route. We completed some of these works earlier in 2025.

Update on traffic management on Hampstead Road and Lindlington Place

• Southbound lane and eastern footpath near Varndell Street – extended to 16 February. Pedestrian diversion route will be in place.
• Northbound lane on near Varndell Street to be completed by 2 February. Upon completion, we will open Varndell Street*
• Southbound lane and footpath closure south of Cardington Street – extended to 27 February. Pedestrian diversion route will be in place.
• Lane and footpath closure near Ampthill Estate – 2 February to 31 March. We will maintain access to Ampthill estate at all times.
• Lane closure on Lidlington Place near Eversholt Street – 9 February to 31 March. The pedestrian crossings will be maintained.

We will continue to monitor the traffic management and reduce impacts where possible. We apologise for any inconvenience these works may cause.

* Note: MDjv construction partner also will be carrying out the final phase of water main installation and commissioning works on Cumberland Market and Hampstead Road near Robert Street. There will be no access to Hampstead Road via Robert Street, access from The Regent Park Estate will be maintained via Varndell Street, which will be opened prior this works commence.  For details please follow this link.
