What we are doing
Copthall Tunnel is an 880m cut and cover tunnel between the Colne Valley Viaduct and Northolt Tunnel. It has two portal ends and five natural ventilation openings, each between 15 and 17 metres high. The tunnel structure, including drainage, retaining walls and ventilation shafts, has been completed in the area between Breakspear Road South and Harvil Road. Ongoing work on the headhouse and maintenance sidings, including backfilling over the tunnel, will continue throughout 2026.
The earthworks at the Northern Sustainable Placement Area (NSPA), created using material from Copthall Tunnel, were completed in late summer 2024, and landscaping is well underway. Most of the mounds have been seeded, with around 45,000 trees already planted. The Southern Sustainable Placement Area (SSPA), formed from material from Northolt Tunnel, is also being landscaped, with final planting across both areas continuing through 2026.
We produce maps showing key site activities in the Copthall Tunnel area, NSPA and SSPA view details via the pdf document below.
These maps will be updated on a weekly basis.
