What we are doing
The new HS2 tunnels broadly follow the route of the Chiltern Mainline Railway and London Underground Central Line. This means that the new HS2 tunnel will run beneath several major roads, some of which have significant utilities embedded within them. This includes:
- Ickenham Road
- Blenheim Crescent
- West End Road
- Bridgwater Road
- Station Approach
Two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are constructing the tunnels, and this will cause small movements in the ground, known as settlement. Extensive surveying of the area has been conducted to understand how the utilities will respond to settlement and what measures are required in advance of the tunnelling, such as monitoring, strengthing or diverting the utilities. To ensure our operatives can complete these works safely, traffic management measures such as lane closures and temporary traffic lights are required.
The main utilities’ protection and diversion programme started in January 2022 and is due to continue until December 2023.
We produce maps showing key site activities in the South Ruislip area.
These maps will be updated on a weekly basis.
