What we are doing
Network Rail is working in partnership with HS2 to prepare the existing railway for the construction of HS2. This involves realigning sections of track, overhead wires, signalling and other vital rail systems to connect the Great Western Main Line railway to a new station being built by HS2 at Old Oak Common.
Network Rail’s electrification work, which is expected to be completed in 2026, will enable electric trains to be diverted during planned closures of the Great Western Main Line railway to support the construction of HS2. This is to help reduce disruption for passengers and will provide a long term benefit to allow greener and cleaner electric trains to run on this section of the rail network. Because this route is used by a lot of freight trains, these works will need to take place during weekends at night to minimise disruption to the railway.
