What we are doing
To enable HS2 in the West Midlands, multiple assets need to be built at Delta Junction, spanning from Green Lane in Coleshill to Water Orton Village. These assets are crucial for constructing the HS2 line and ensuring its future operation.
Delta Junction, located in the borough of North Warwickshire, consists of significant construction assets managed by BBV. These assets include the main line running North to South and the line connecting Birmingham, known as the Birmingham Spur / North Chord.
BBV has three main interfaces with the National Highways strategic network at Delta Junction: the M42/M6 East and West viaducts, M42 Coleshill box structure, and Water Orton 1 & 2 viaducts.
The M42/M6 link road works are essential for the earthworks haulage strategy. The east viaduct will temporarily accommodate dump trucks to transport materials over the link road, reducing the number of lorries on the strategic road network. Site accesses built in July 2021 facilitate construction activities.
Throughout 2023, piers and abutments for the M42/M6 link viaducts have been under construction. Two 158m long composite viaducts will carry the HS2 line over the M42/M6 motorway, connecting Interchange station and Curzon Street Station. Preparation works have been mainly done offline to minimize disruption to the live road network.
In February 2024, the first section of the viaduct was launched halfway across the motorway using a push-pull jacking system. The second phase involves pushing the remaining deck over both westbound and eastbound motorway link roads. Further work, including in-situ concrete deck works and parapet installation, will complete the structure under short-term closures following the launch.
Work breakdown:
- Full weekend closure from 3 am on Saturday, April 20, to 5 am Monday, April 22.
- Westbound closure from M42 southbound at junction 8 to M6 northbound at junction 4a.
- Eastbound closure from M6 southbound junction 4a, affecting access to M42 northbound and southbound.
