What we are doing
Throughout 2023 we have been constructing the piers and abutments for the M42/M6 link viaducts. There are two 158m long composite viaducts in this area that will carry the HS2 line over the M42/M6 motorway, between Interchange station and Curzon Street Station.
Most of these preparation works have been done off-line to minimise disruption, where possible, on the live road network. We are now ready to push the first viaduct into position which will be completed in two main launching phases. A breakdown of the first phase is detailed below.
This is the first time this technique has been used in the UK. This technique allows for the viaducts to be installed during short, temporary closures of the M42/M6 Link road.
To complete these works safely we need two weeks of overnight closures to gain access to the central pier and install the temporary equipment and access scaffold for the bridge launch these closures will be on the Westbound carriageway- from Wednesday 24 January to Friday 2 February, 9pm to 5am each weekday, and on the M42 southbound at junction 8 to the M6 northbound at junction 4a.
