What we are doing

As part of our early environmental works, we will establish critical environmental and species relocation sites creating new habitats for local wildlife before any main work starts.

We will be creating various ecological habitats on land to the south of Checkley Lane. Once complete, the habitats will be ready to receive sensitive species from other line of route sites.

Before we start to construct the habitat areas, we need to excavate some archaeological trial trenches. These are to help us understand if there are any archaeological features or natural geological deposits that we need to be aware of before we start any other work. We will use a mechanical excavator to dig the trenches.

The planting on this land will form part of the HS2 Green Corridor. The Green Corridor will run alongside the railway, creating a network of bigger, better-connected, climate-resilient habitats and new green spaces for people to enjoy – the Green Corridor is the largest single environmental project in the UK.

When the work will take place

We will start the work to create the habitats on 20 July 2022. This work will be ongoing throughout the year and the timeline for the works is shown below:

  • Archaeological trial trenches – July ’22 to August ‘22
  • Grassland habitat creation – August ‘22 to September ‘22
  • Woodland habitat creation – September ’22 to November ‘22
  • Demobilisation – early December ‘22
