What we are doing

As part of our early environmental works, we will establish critical environmental and species relocation sites creating new habitats for local wildlife before any main work starts. We will be creating ecological mitigation ponds surrounded by grassland habitat creation on land off the A51 between Bottom Lane and Tittensor Road.

We will use the ponds to relocate any protected species, such as Great Crested Newts before we need to remove any other habitats. Before we start to construct the ponds, we need to excavate some archaeological trial trenches. These are to help us understand if there are any archaeological features or natural geological deposits, that we need to be aware of before we start any other work. We will use a mechanical excavator to dig the trenches. No further excavation takes place at this stage.

We will need to install temporary two-way traffic lights to manage the safe movement of the equipment and machinery on and off site. We will put the lights place between from 4 July to 15 July, 9am to 5pm.

When the work take place?

We will start the excavation work on 4 July 2022. We will begin work to create the ponds themselves once we have carried out the archaeological work, the pond work will be ongoing throughout the year. The timeline for the works is shown below:

  • Archaeological trial trenching – July ‘22
  • Mitigation pond creation – July to Sept ‘22
  • Hedge planting – Oct to Nov ‘22
  • Demobilisation – Dec ‘22

UPDATE JUNE 2022- Cadent will now be carrying out routine testing and commissioning work on the relocated pipeline. This will be taking place on two weekends: 2 to 3 July and 9 to 10 July.  No construction activity will take place outside of core HS2 working hours, but a small number of workers will be onsite throughout, making operational changes to the pipe and monitoring the testing activity.

UPDATE OCTOBER 2022 – We will need to install temporary two-way traffic lights to manage the safe movement of the water tankers on and off site.
