What we are doing
We are continuing our work to divert utilities cables and an existing sewer on Wormwood Scrubs. You can find out more about our works, including our latest works updates here: https://www.hs2.org.uk/in-your-area/local-community-webpages/hs2-in-old-oak-and-north-acton/wormwood-scrubs/
Extended weekend working hours on Old Oak Common Station site
To complete the next part of the Stamford Brook Sewer diversion works, we need to extend our standard working hours. From 31 October to 23 December working hours on Monday to Friday will be 8am to 10pm, 8am to 6pm on Saturdays and 10am to 6pm on Sundays.
How will we reduce disruption to the local community?
This work is taking place approximately 650m away from the edge of the site compound that borders Old Oak Common Lane. Please see the map on the next page for the location of these works.
The work is unlikely to create any noise implications to the community. However, we will employ the following measures to minimise any impact on site neighbours:
- We will use best practicable means to reduce any excess noise. For example, machinery will be switched off when not in use and acoustic barriers will be set up around the work areas.
- To reinforce our ‘Shush’ campaign in the community, we will be re-briefing our teams to ensure that no excess noise is made during these works including the sounding of horns, banging truck doors, talking loudly, or leaving engines idling.
- To reduce light disturbance from the work activities only necessary task and safety lighting will be used on the site. All lighting will point into the works area or down to the ground to reduce excess light impacting the local community.
What will this work involve?
As part of the sewer diversion works, we need to connect the new sewer with the old one. Before we can connect to the existing sewer, the following works need to take place:
• The existing sewer will need to be opened and temporary pipes will need to be installed to maintain the flow
• Two manholes need to be constructed which will allow access into the new sewer
• To do this we will need to excavate approximately 8 metres below ground level
• We will need to pour concrete slabs to support the temporary and permanent structure
• We will also need to construct manhole walls to support the newly built manhole
• Finally, once the manholes have been constructed, we will need to backfill and remove the temporary works
As the sewer system flows underneath the Crossrail rail tracks, for safety reasons, we are required to reduce the duration of these works to mitigate risk exposure to the sewer and the live railway.
Therefore, to ensure that these works are carried out safely, we need to increase our standard working hours. From 31 October to 23 December working hours on Monday to Friday will be 8am to 10pm, 8am to 6pm on Saturdays and 10am to 6pm on Sundays.
This work is due to take place in the timeframes outlined in this letter and all approvals will be in place prior to works commencing.
