Birmingham

A47 Heartlands Parkway
Contractor
BBV JV
Type of works
Partial road closure
Estimated Start Date
26/01/2026
Estimated End Date

What we are doing

As we build the new high speed railway line in Birmingham, we need to rebuild the existing overbridge on Aston Church Road. This is due to the existing bridge not having enough headroom for the new HS2 trains to pass underneath. To rebuild the bridge, Aston Church Road is currently closed to all vehicles.

The new Aston Church Road Bridge was originally expected to reopen to vehicles and pedestrians in December 2025. As previously communicated, the road closure had to be extended due to the need to divert additional uncharted utilities that we had not anticipated encountering. This extended the closure to 25 January 2026.

We are pleased to confirm that we still expect to meet this date for reopening Aston Church Road. The road will remain closed until 25 January and will reopen ready for 26 January 2026.

However, we have been unable to complete the remaining works on the short section of Arley Road, adjacent to Majid Ali. This section will need to remain closed for an additional three weeks and is now expected to reopen on 16 February 2026.

Location

A47 Heartlands Parkway from Aston Church Road Roundabout to Nechells Parkway

Duration

We previously contacted you to inform you that the road will be closured from 8.00pm on 25th January to 6.00am on 26th January we now propose to close the road during the day on 26th January from 6.00am to 6.00pm.

What to expect

To keep traffic moving in the area cars will be diverted along A47 Heartlands Parkway, Saltley Viaduct and Washwood Heath Road. Access to businesses and properties will be maintained.

HS2 is undergoing a comprehensive reset to ensure it can be built efficiently and for the lowest reasonable cost. This work is being carried out in stages and will be completed in 2026. We will provide you with updates on the reset and what this means for our plans to build the railway in your area.
