What we are doing
Upcoming diversion of Saltley overflow weir Birmingham and Warwick Junction Canal
As we prepare to construct the new Saltley Canal Underbridge, we will need to divert Birmingham and Warwick Junction Canal’s existing overflow weir in Saltley. The overflow weir maintains the water levels of the canal by overflowing high levels of water into Saltley reservoir.
We need to divert the overflow weir because it is currently located where we will be building the new Saltley Canal Underbridge.
What we will be doing?
The overflow weir diversion will be taking place in December 2021. To complete the diversion, we will need to drive sheet piles into the ground to create a dry dock. Once we have a dry dock, we will then be able to construct the concrete structures that will form the weir.
We will monitor and control the levels of noise, vibration and dust during our construction. Pedestrians, cyclists and boats will be able to continue to use the canal as we carry out these works.
