What we are doing

We are remodelling and improving sections of the existing road network near Northway Island and creating new routes on HS2 land. These road improvements will ensure that when the future station is operational, the local road network is fit for purpose. Upon completion, a new T-junction will replace Northway Island. A new ‘longabout’ is already in operation outside the Holiday Inn Express NEC, on the way to the National Exhibition Centre (NEC).

To date, we have connected parts of the existing road network to some of the new routes we have created. We started the creation of the new T-junction in April 2021, which included installing a new direction of travel around Northway Island for road users. This direction of travel around the island is now permanent until the T-junction is fully constructed and brought into use later in HS2’s overall programme of works in the area.

Off peak single lane closures

In order to complete this section of the works, from the 24 October to 11 November 2022, there will be occasional, temporary, off-peak single lane closures installed around the longabout, on parts of Northway Island, into Birmingham Business Park, on the way to the NEC, and along short sections of the B4438 and Northway. These traffic measures will be installed as and when required depending on the progress of our programme. These lane closures will not be in place every day, and will only be operational from 9am to 3.30pm. You will still be able to travel on all routes.

This work is subject to the approval of relevant permits and consents.
