What we are doing
We are carrying out several site preparation activities in Calvert. The High-Speed Rail (London – West Midlands) Act 2017 includes Environmental Minimum Requirements and a Code of Construction Practice which sets out how we undertake our construction activities.
Substantial ecological surveys have taken place in this area since 2012. We come back and survey every two years to ensure the results are valid and up to date.
These surveys have provided a detailed understanding of the ecology in the area and allowed us to develop plans for translocating the ecology ahead of removing vegetation.
Future construction in this area will include work to reduce the volume of construction traffic on local roads:
- Constructing an access road from the West Street construction site compound (where the workforce is based) to the East-West Rail Overbridge.
- Constructing other access roads and associated works near the Calvert Road compound
- Preparation works for compounds and bridge works which include ground investigations and test piling. Both activities will help us understand the ground conditions in the area.
Tree Planting
A significant programme of tree planting will continue to take place in the Sheephouse Wood and Decoypond Wood area from mid-November 2020 into the planting season of 2021.
We will be planting trees 1.75 – 2.5 metres in height to establish new bat flight path lines within these areas. There will be approximately 75,000 transplant whips, container grown trees and shrubs planted which will be a mixture of native trees and shrub species which complement the current species within the surrounding countryside.
