What we are doing

Network Rail is continuing to help prepare for Britain’s new High Speed 2 (HS2) railway. We’re working to demolish and replace the existing SAS13 Bridge. This will enable the construction of the new HS2 railway lines underneath it. Once complete, the new structure will also allow for a road to the new train depot and maintenance facility for HS2.

The current plan is to demolish the existing bridge and install the new bridge in May 2022 during a railway blockade. Most of this work will take place during daytime hours, except for when we need to carry out work on track that requires trains to not be running. The nature of the work means that there will be some noise and at times we will need to use bright lights, however we’ll make every effort to minimise disturbance to you. Unnecessary noise will be reduced where possible using a variety of techniques including super-silenced generators, and we’ll regularly monitor noise levels during our work. All our staff and contractors will also be briefed on their obligation to work responsibly in the local community.

What are we doing?

We last notified you in July 2021 about upcoming work which involved the following:

• Assembling the new steel bridge on an area of land that sits behind the train lines just off Aston Church Road.
• Construction of the foundations for the new bridge on the East and West side of the Birmingham to Derby line.
• Blockade preparation works involving vegetation clearance, construction of compacted stone areas for plant to operate safely on.
• Diverting electrical and drainage cables.

The bridge is now assembled and work leading up to the blockade in May will involve the following:

• Construction of the bridge deck on the new steel bridge.
• Completion of new bridge foundations.
• Ongoing work to divert electrical and drainage cables.
• Blockade preparation works involving vegetation clearance, construction of compacted stone areas for equipment to operate safely.
• Installation of drainage.
• Track and Overhead Line preparation works.
