What we are doing
Saltley Viaduct is located 3.2km (two miles) north-east of Birmingham City Centre. The viaduct crosses over the high speed railway as it travels into the new high-speed station at Birmingham Curzon Street.
The current bridge is not tall enough for the new high speed railway to travel underneath, so a new viaduct is being built to support the area’s future transport needs.

Most of the new viaduct is being built “offline,” next to the current structure. This helps:
- Shorten the length of the road closure
- Reduce noise and general disruption
- Limit the amount of utility work required
To complete the construction of the new viaduct safely, the viaduct will need to be fully closed.
When will the viaduct close?
Saltley Viaduct is planned to be closed for up to 18 months starting 10 May 2026 (subject to consent).
How will we keep people moving?
We will have carefully planned diversion routes agreed with Birmingham City Council and Transport for West Midlands for pedestrians and vehicles which will be clearly communicated and signed with real-time travel updates.
Drivers
Diversions will direct vehicles along:
- Aston Church Road
- Washwood Heath Road
- Duddeston Mill Road
Pedestrians and cyclists
Safe alternative walking and cycling routes will be clearly signposted.
Bus users
We are working closely with bus operators to keep services running. Some bus stops may need to be moved, with clear signage at stop provided.
