What we are doing
We are planning to re-open Mornington Street bridge to vehicles from early 2024.
The bridge will be opened with a 3-tonne weight limit in place. We will manage the weight limit by placing width restriction barriers at both ends of the bridge. We will replace the bridge signs in the area to notify road users of the new 3-tonne weight limit. For safety reasons, Network Rail and SCS will continue to monitor the bridge whilst work continues beneath it.
On Sunday 26 November, from 7pm to 12am, we will install width restriction barriers and traffic management in preparation for reopening the bridge. We will return on Monday 27 November to fill the barriers with water. Once we receive all the necessary consents, we will then open the bridge without further delay. Once the bridge is opened, Park Village East will revert to the previous two-way system south of the bridge.
Please note we will close the bridge to vehicle traffic for about five years during tunnelling works. This closure is currently planned to start in 2026. We will maintain access for pedestrians and cyclists throughout this period. We will inform you about this closer to the time.
We understand the practical problems the closure of the bridge has caused for local residents and vehicles and are sincerely sorry for the length of time it has taken to reopen the bridge.
