What we are doing
On Thursday 1 February 2024 we closed the canal and towpath to remove the existing waterpipe scaffold bridge and then began the construction of the viaduct deck across the Grand Union Canal using a large machine called a launching girder. During the closure the canal is closed to all boats at a point south of Harefield Marina. Access to the marina remains open but passage south towards Uxbridge is not possible whilst construction takes place during the day and night. This is to ensure the safety of both users of the canal, pedestrians, and construction workers.
From the 15 March until the end of April 2024 we expect to be able to open the canal during the day for boats – closing only at nighttime – to ensure that canal movements are not limited out of normal stoppage season. Closure times for nights are 6pm in the evening to 5am the following morning from 15 March to 31 March. For the month of April, the nighttime closures will be from 7pm in the evening until 5am the following morning.
