What we are doing
Throughout 2023 we constructed the piers and abutments for the M42/M6 link road viaducts. There are two 158m long composite viaducts that will carry the HS2 line over the M42/M6 motorway link road. Most of the preparation work has been done off-line to minimise disruption, where possible, on the live road network.
In February 2024 we launched the first section, pushing the bridge halfway across the motorway. In April 2024 this section was pushed across the second carriageway. This technique allows for the viaduct decks to be built offline and positioned during short closures of the M42/M6 link road.
We are now ready for the third phase of this installation which involves pushing the first section of the second deck over the westbound carriageway of the M42/M6 link road.
There will be a full weekend closure of the westbound carriageway from 3am on Saturday 6 July to 5am on Monday 8 July 2024. The closure will be in place from the M42 southbound at junction 8 to the M6 northbound at junction 4a.
