Who we are and what we do

HS2 Ltd is the company building the high-speed railway between London and Birmingham – a central part of Great British Railways and Britain’s national rail network. HS2 will create much needed new capacity between Britain’s two biggest cities, relieve pressure on the wider network and strengthen connections across the country.

We bring together the designers and contractors needed to build the railway. We buy land and property to build, maintain and operate it, and we award contracts worth billions of pounds. We’re a non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department for Transport.

We’re a taxpayer-funded organisation. That means every decision we make must reflect our accountability for public money. We’re open about our costs, our progress and the challenges we face – and we expect to be held to account.

We’re reforming. Safety is our priority, costs are under control, governance is tighter and we’re putting the right capability in place. With a four-year funding settlement from government and a plan to complete civils construction by 2029, HS2 is on firm foundations.
