HS2 in Staffordshire
Programme reset
In October 2025, the decision was taken to defer further construction of HS2 north of Birmingham for four years. The deferral will prioritise efforts and resources on the opening section of HS2 between Old Oak Common and Birmingham. Our approach ensures that the benefits of HS2 are felt by passengers and businesses as quickly as possible while protecting the use of taxpayers’ money. We remain fully committed to completing the 18-mile stretch north of Birmingham.
Some essential construction in Staffordshire will continue, such as critical utility works and work already underway that intersect major assets like A-roads, motorways and the conventional rail network. This also includes the completion of works on the A5 overbridge and the realignment of the A38.
What we're building in Staffordshire
Fulfen Wood overbridge
We’re building Fulfen Wood overbridge near Lichfield. The bridge allows HS2 to pass beneath the West Coast Main Line at Fulfen Wood.
Streethay overbridge
We’re building Streethay overbridge near Lichfield. The bridge allows the railway to pass under the South Staffordshire line at Streethay.
