What we are doing

From October 2021, we started earthworks for the Aylesbury South Cutting, initial work was to install temporary and permanent drainage systems, and this was followed by the commencement of bulk excavation for the Cutting. This work involves the excavation, movement, storage and reuse of earthworks.

We have been removing topsoil as well as sub-soil and moving it from areas of cuttings, to areas along the route where embankments are required, creating stockpiles and subbase for the main line. Some of the excavated material will also be used to support construction of the footpath overbridges and Stoke Mandeville bypass structures.

EKFB use tractors and bowsers to spray the whole route, to suppress any dust generation that may arise from the articulated dump trucks hauling the soil. All stockpiles are sprayed and compacted to avoid having loose topsoil. Stockpiles are seeded, irrigated and maintained to form a vegetation layer on top of long-term stockpiles.

Environmental advisors, construction supervisors and managers undertake regular inspections to ensure that these measures are consistently in place. Works are also be closely monitored via the installation of noise monitoring equipment.

Works will take place between 8am and 6pm – Monday to Friday but likely to finish earlier in the winter months as the daylight fades. Some additional weekend work may also take place.
