What we are doing
Construction of the 8.4 mile (13.5km) long twin-bore Northolt Tunnel is complete between Old Oak Common and West Ruislip.
We are continuing with building the emergency and maintenance walkways inside the tunnel, with works ongoing until autumn 2026. These walkways will allow passengers to safely evacuate a train and walk to the nearest cross passage and rescue train should there be an emergency.
The cross passages are short tunnels which connect two parallel running tunnels approximately 500 metres apart along the Northolt tunnel route. The next phase of works will be to install the cross passage doors which will provide fire protection between the cross passages, these works are expected to be completed by late autumn 2026.
HS2 is undergoing a comprehensive reset to ensure it can be built efficiently and for the lowest reasonable cost. This work is being carried out in stages and will be completed in 2026. We will provide you with updates on the reset and what this means for our plans to build the railway in your area.
