HS2’s design aims to be inspirational, look good, work well, be easily maintained and provide value for money for its customers. We want to build the best railway experience in the UK and to do this, we are exploring innovations to support our vision while meeting the highest safety and environmental standards.
With the first stations not due to open for several years, we’re using technology such as virtual reality to provide early user feedback on the passenger experiences to help refine our civil engineering and station designs.
Station exploration through virtual reality
In an innovative world-first, virtual reality, eye-tracking and emotion-sensing technology is being developed in combination and being used to develop how passengers will navigate their way around the new HS2 station at Old Oak Common.
Passenger experience
In 2016, HS2’s Design Team commissioned a landmark study to test the Phase One hybrid bill design from the passenger’s perspective. This was then developed into a virtually simulated experience along a 10km section of the route using a methodology that accurately simulates a passenger’s journey on HS2.
