Temporary uses at Euston

In line with direction from the Government, HS2 are rephasing the construction of Euston as they develop the scheme further. A copy of the Transport Secretary’s statement is available online here. This means that HS2 will be delivered differently than planned over the next few years and some works will be paused.

There will be several work sites across the Euston area where work will be brought to a safe stop. This presents the opportunity to remove temporary road closures, change hoarding lines, and bring some areas into temporary use for the community while construction is paused.

Working through The Euston Partnership (TEP), we are collaborating across partners to develop ideas and identify temporary use projects. The projects being considered will include a mixture of community-led and commercial operator-led. Any temporary uses are intended to respond to community priorities, identified through previous consultation, such as greening & growing, culture & creativity and sports & leisure, amongst others.

We are committed to working with the local community and providing available space to meet their needs. Community input will be crucial in determining what happens with these spaces during this time.

The Euston Meanwhile Use Fund – open for applications

The Euston Meanwhile Use Fund will provide grants of up to £10,000 for community-led projects. We are seeking applications for any projects that will benefit the local community, whether by utilising any of the ‘meanwhile’ spaces or by supporting communities that have been impacted by the construction slow-down at Euston.

Euston Square Gardens West

Following the opening of Euston’s new taxi rank, Euston Square Gardens West will be reopening with restoration of the area for public use. With the western taxi rank being partly decommissioned, a temporary public garden with new planting, seating areas and a walking route through to the station will become available for community use later this year.

As part of our meanwhile use programme to temporarily reopen spaces for the community while station construction is paused, we engaged with residents and local businesses to gain their input to help shape the design for this space. A series of engagement took place in October 2023 and based on the feedback received we have revised the design of the garden.

The revised design will allow for more open green space and additional planting for screening, and a wildflower turf to help with biodiversity. We are committed to working with the local community and providing available space to meet local priorities.

The garden will be constructed by HS2’s station construction partner, Mace Dragados joint venture (MDjv) and works are expected to take place over summer 2014. The space will remain until the area is required for construction of a future HS2 terminus.
